Wilcox Diary List of Names
List of names mentioned in William H.H. Wilcox's Civil War diary while in Libby Prison. As I learn who these people are, more information will be provided.
Capt. E.C. Alexander -- 1 Del Vols. In a letter, Wilcox asks his friend "Charley" to find out all he can about the "character and standing" of Alexander
Annie -- notes that he answered a letter from her; more unknown
Angee or Angel - notes that he received a letter from her
Capt. Chase -- Dec. 22, 1863 letter, Wilcox says that men of "N. England drew lots to be sent to Salisbury, N.C. at hard labor" and lists the names Capt. Litchfield, Capt. Chase and Capt. Kendall so it is presumed they were the three unlucky ones.
Emily Clark -- called "Nellie" in the letters; based on the way he talks to her, she is someone special. It is most likely his first wife, Emily Clark Wilcox (they married in 1868). He also has a notation for Mrs. Emily Clark living at 61 Bank Street in New York City.
Charles W. Cowtan - sounds like a friend and fellow soldier. Called "Charley" in some letters and is believed to be Charles W. Cowtan (or Cowlan) who served in the 10th NY with Wilcox
Dewey -- notes that he received a letter from Dewey; more unknown
Mary Eacker - seems to be his cousin; Wilcox had a cousin Mary Wilcox Woodruff who was the daughter of Chauncy & MaryAnn Wilcox (Chauncy was Lester Wilcox’s brother)
A.P. Hill --
Capt. Kendall -- Dec. 22, 1863 letter, Wilcox says that men of "N. England drew lots to be sent to Salisbury, N.C. at hard labor" and lists the names Capt. Litchfield, Capt. Chase and Capt. Kendall so it is presumed they were the three unlucky ones.
