Koehler Family Stories
Henry Koehler/Heinrich Koehler (1888-1927)
Henry Koehler immigrated to this country as Heinrich Kohler from Germany.
Henry's Declaration of Intent and Naturalization Petition (filed June 1917 in New York) state that he was born in Cservenka, Hungary (Cservenka appears to be a part of Serbia today). The papers also state that he left Bremen, Germany on January 8, 1906 on the ship, Hannover, and arrived in Galveston, Texas on January 18, 1906. However, the Hannover ship manifest states that the vessel arrived in Galveston on January 24, 1906. The ship manifest shows Henry traveling with Margit Kohler, age 20, (believed to be his sister) to see their father, Heinrich Kohler. At some point, Henry moved to New York and married Jenny Melville and they had a son, Millard, born in NY. In 1917, he was living in New York and listed his profession as a tool maker. In the 1920 census, his occupation is listed as a supervisor for a manufacturing company. He was buried with his wife at Hollywood Cemetery. There is no grave marker at the site. According to the cemetery employees, a tombstone was never placed there. The plot card lists the interment date for Jennie Koehler as Jan. 21, 1970. It also lists Henry Koehler (her husband) interred on April 22, 1927 and James Melville (her father) interred on June 8, 1951. |
