William H.H. Wilcox's grandfather's brother, George Eacker, was the guy who shot Alexander Hamilton's son, Philip in a duel. Well, according to this site, the pistols used by Philip, and later used by his father, Alexander Hamilton, in the famous duel against Aaron Burr were donated to a NY bank that eventually merged with Chase Manhattan Bank. Sadly it doesn't appear that they are on display but you can at least see a picture of them at that website. A real irony is that the the bank the pistols were donated to was originally founded by Burr.

I was looking for more information on Gertrude and Jacob Eacker (also spelled as Eacher), ancestors to the Koehlers. Gertrude also is the daughter of George Herkimer, capt in the Revolutionary War, and niece of Gen. Nicholas Herkimer.
I found this book on page 53, it says: "Gertrude Eacher, daughter of George Herkimer, was the wife of Jacob Eacher, brother of the George Eacher who fought a duel with young Philip Hamilton, son of Alexander Hamilton. A summary of the duel states that: "Eacker and Richard Price took the field first at Weehawken, on November 22. They exchanged shots, but no one was injured; according to convention, honor was satisfied. Philip Hamilton stood next against Eacker, on November 23. Hamilton fell to a ball from Eacker's smoothbore dueling pistol. Eacker was uninjured; Philip Hamilton died a day later." |
